Flagyl is a brand-name prescription antimicrobial used to treat bacterial infections of the heart, blood, nervous system, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, lungs, joints, bones, and skin. Extended-release metronidazole is commonly prescribed to treat bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted infections such as trichomoniasis.

As an antimicrobial, Flagyl cannot be used to treat viral infections. If Flagyl is being used to treat a sexually transmitted infection (like trichomoniasis), both sex partners should use the medication simultaneously. This helps reduce the risk of reinfection in either partner. Antimicrobials stop the growth of harmful microorganisms in the body, so simultaneous use in both partners of metronidazole will help prevent the infection from living on and being passed between partners.

I took Flagyl (metronidazole) for 2 weeks. I was on 400 mg of Metronidazole for 7 days, and I was fine. I took Flagyl for 3 days in 3 days. I took Flagyl for 3 days in 6 days, and I still have it for 3 days. I take 500 mg every 24 hours. I took Flagyl for 1 week and stopped taking it because of it. My doctor said it is too high, but I took 500 mg of Metronidazole twice daily. I took Flagyl for 5 days and my stomachs felt better. The next day I stopped taking it. I was fine, and it didn't take effect. The only thing is, I don't want to drink anything that causes an ulcer. I want to take a flagyl. I would recommend this medication to anyone.Read MoreRead Less

I had a stomach ulcer 3 months ago, and it was bad. I had to have an oral antacid and take it every day. The ulcer went away in a few days, but the ulcer still happened. I am now on 400 mg of Metronidazole and have no stomach aches. I am trying to eat a diet and exercise, and this drug works great. I am scared that it will go away, but I would say no. I am now taking Flagyl. I am scared that it will stay on the stomach for an extended period of time. It is not clear what happens when I take this medication.
